The opening
address was given by Kath Tunstall, Strategic Director of
Services to Children
and Young People and Chair of the Bradford
Safeguarding Children Board (below with Cllr Gill). She
highlighted that the development of the Basic Awareness in
Child Abuse and Neglect E learning package is evidence of
the commitment of the Safeguarding Board to the statement
of intent it made when it was established a year ago to
“help all staff and professionals to work together and
know the rules about keeping children safe “.

Her comments were supported by Councillor Colin Gill, the
Lead Member for Children and Young People Services, who
has particular responsibility for safeguarding children
and young people. He gave an enthusiastic endorsement of
using new technology as a method of learning. He was
particularly proud that Bradford has taken the lead on
this which other areas of the country are now following.
It is also a significant achievement of one of the
objectives of the Bradford Safeguarding Children Business
Plan and importantly it means that basic awareness
training in child abuse and neglect is now accessible to
all those working with children and young people in the
Bradford District.

Lesley Ord, Operations Director with
Virtual College (left above with Kath Tunstall and
Julie Evans, BSCB Training Officer), the Ilkley-based
company who have produced the training package with
assistance from Bradford Safeguarding Children Board,
demonstrated the package and emphasised the merits of the
development of on-line learning. She also highlighted
that through the establishment of the Safeguarding
e-academy there are now 22 Safeguarding Boards involved
with the opportunity to develop more modules in related
topics i.e. Domestic Abuse, Runaways etc.
Bradford Safeguarding Board was the first member of this
which now has 14 founder members from Newcastle to
Southend.
A film made in Bradford about the students of the
Dance Academy was introduced by Paul O’Hara
Bradford Youth Offending Team Manager which showcased
the work they do in introducing vulnerable young people to
performance arts and the positive impact this has on their
personal development.

The launch event also provided an opportunity to log on to
the training package
and experience the training.
