Introduction
The Bradford Safeguarding Children Board (BSCB)
came into existence on 14th March 2006 as a
requirement of the Children Act, 2004. It is
made up of statutory and voluntary sector
agencies that work together to protect children
and young people from abuse and neglect, and to
promote their welfare. For a full list of the
agencies on the BSCB,
The Independent Chair of BSCB is
Professor Nick
Frost, Professor of Social Work at Leeds
Metropolitan University.
The Board members are senior managers in their
agencies, and they are responsible for ensuring
that their agencies co-operate to safeguard
children and young people. They also aim to make
sure that children and young people who use
their services not only stay safe, but also
achieve better outcomes so that they can enter
adulthood successfully.
Partnership working is the key principle that
underpins the work of the BSCB and its member
organisations. This means not only that agencies
work in partnership with each other, but also
that agencies develop good partnerships with
families. |
The BSCB works
though a structure of sub groups that ensure
that staff in all agencies have access to
up-to-date procedures and good quality training.
The BSCB also undertakes serious case reviews
where there is a need for professionals to learn
lessons from situations of abuse or neglect that
have resulted in the death or serious injury of
a child or young person.
The functions, role and responsibilities of the
BSCB are set out in Chapter 3 of “Working
Together to Safeguard Children”, published in
December 2005 by the
Department for Education
and Skills. |
The
Bradford Safe Parenting Handbook
is an extensive information resource designed for use by
parents, carers and professionals alike. It contains
advice and guidelines on all the major issues affecting
children and young people and includes many local and national
contacts.
Learning the lessons from the Haringey Baby P case
Kath Tunstall (former Board Chair) wrote to staff in
all BSCB member agencies about the tragic case of
Baby P. In addition to those set out in
national responses to the lessons learnt from this
case, the letter sets out specific initiatives to be
taken in the Bradford District.
